It started when I brought home six peeping chicks from Tractor Supply. I’d been wanting a little flock of backyard chickens for five or six years, but for the first time in my life, I was living in a house where I could have them.
Chickens, as many will agree, are gateway livestock. (Yes, that’s a thing.) It wasn’t long after raising those six chicks that I was daydreaming about rabbits, goats, pigs, and gardens. It was pretty clear that our 1 bedroom cottage on a half acre of land wasn’t going to cut it in the long run for our growing family and farming dreams.
We purchased our little homestead in 2015. It felt like a full-circle homecoming for us; the house is located in the town Mike grew up in, and in the same school district he and I both graduated from. It’s a piece of property we’d both driven past and admired countless times. A historic home, built in 1801 and lovingly maintained by the families that have lived here, and one we are proud to be stewards of.
